A Meal Cooked By a Lover Is Always Delicious – Even When It Tastes Terrible

Cooking for someone is one of the purest expressions of care — whether it’s a grandmother ladling chicken soup for her sniffly grandson, a mum slipping a ham sandwich onto her heartbroken daughter’s lap, or a neighbor offering leftover lardy cake to the widower next door (a scene that might’ve died out with black-and-white telly, but one can dream).

Being cooked for always feels good — but when it’s your lover behind the stove, it just hits different. Even when the food isn’t great, there’s something deeply tender about the gesture. Unfortunately, the rise of the Netflix-and-chill era has pushed home-cooked romance to the back burner. These days, the sizzling seduction of a home-cooked meal has been swapped for scrolling through Deliveroo menus.

Why sweat over a soufflé when there’s a 2-for-1 pizza deal, sticky-finger chicken wings, and a comically oversized bottle of soda just a tap away? Salt, grease, convenience — followed by a cheeky romp and some binge-watching? Honestly, it’s tempting. I get it.

But still — there’s a different kind of intimacy in cooking. It’s less about perfection, more about presence. Something no takeaway can ever quite serve up.
